How we test, category by category
Hands-on means something different for a mattress than for a torque wrench. Here is what it means in each of the fifteen categories, and where the evidence stops.

The general six-step process -- define the use case, sort claims into verifiable and unverifiable, obtain the product and say how, use it for a stated period, record the failures, publish the limits -- is set out on the about page and is not repeated here. This page answers the question that process cannot: what it actually looks like in each vertical.
One thing applies to all fifteen and is worth stating before the list. Almost none of the portfolio has launched yet, so for most verticals this has not been carried out. What follows is the standard each site is held to, not a description of work already done.
Category 01
Electronics & audio
- What can be verified
- Published driver specs, codec support, stated battery capacity, ingress rating and the standard it was tested to.
- What hands-on means
- Weeks of daily use on a real commute, not an hour in a quiet room. Battery measured at the volume people actually use outdoors.
- Where it stops
- Perceived sound quality is subjective and is described rather than scored. Long-term battery decay takes years and cannot be reported at launch.

Category 02
Automotive
- What can be verified
- Load ratings and the standard behind them, third-party verification where it exists, published recall notices.
- What hands-on means
- Real jobs over months, recording what deformed, seized or wore. For torque tools, drift checked against a reference.
- Where it stops
- We do not destructively test lifting equipment. Where a rating has no independent verification, the page says the rating is the manufacturer's word.

Category 03
Tools & DIY
- What can be verified
- Duty cycle, sustained flow versus peak pressure, consumable part numbers and their real cost, helmet safety certification.
- What hands-on means
- Whole projects rather than test cuts, with consumable usage logged so running cost is measured rather than estimated.
- Where it stops
- Industrial-duty claims cannot be reproduced in a home shop. Machines rated for continuous production are assessed on documentation and labeled that way.

Category 04
Home improvement & safety
- What can be verified
- Lock and safe certification against a named standard, camera resolution and field of view, where footage is stored and for how long, real subscription cost over several years.
- What hands-on means
- Installed and lived with, including the app, the notifications and what happens when the internet drops.
- Where it stops
- We do not attack-test locks or safes; that requires a certified lab, and we say so rather than implying we did.

Category 05
Outdoor & garden
- What can be verified
- Fabric weight, UV rating, timber species and treatment, published wind rating where one exists, evidence of efficacy for pest products.
- What hands-on means
- Left outdoors across a full year and photographed at intervals, because fading, movement and corrosion are the whole story.
- Where it stops
- One site is one climate. Results are reported with the conditions attached rather than generalized to every region.

Category 06
Pets
- What can be verified
- Published minimum space guidance for the species, mesh gauge, latch design, feed composition on the label.
- What hands-on means
- In use with animals, assessed for cleaning time, weather performance and whether latches survive determined attention.
- Where it stops
- Nothing is tested in a way that risks an animal's welfare. Predator resistance is assessed on construction, never by staging an attack.

Category 07
Baby & kids
- What can be verified
- Compliance with the applicable safety standard, materials, measured folded dimensions and complete weights, recognized hip-healthy positioning guidance.
- What hands-on means
- Used by actual parents over months, including the airport test for anything that claims to fold small.
- Where it stops
- Safety standard compliance is read from certification, not re-tested. A product that cannot be verified as compliant is not recommended at any price.

Sports & recreation
- What can be verified
- Stud pattern against surface, approved-equipment lists for competitive play, battery certification and braking specification for electric transport.
- What hands-on means
- A full season for field gear. For e-mobility, range measured with stated rider weight, gradient and temperature.
- Where it stops
- We are not a biomechanics lab. Injury-prevention claims are reported as the manufacturer's, with any supporting study named.

Category 09
Hobbies & crafts
- What can be verified
- Consumable and subscription cost over time, which features sit behind a paywall, third-party material compatibility, spare part availability and price.
- What hands-on means
- Projects run to completion, with blade and mat wear logged, and spares actually ordered to prove they can be got.
- Where it stops
- Platform behavior changes with firmware. Findings are dated and re-checked rather than presented as permanent.

Music gear
- What can be verified
- Measured latency, driver support and update history, published frequency response, input and output counts.
- What hands-on means
- Real recording sessions in an ordinary room, because the room is most of the result and pretending otherwise sells gear nobody needs.
- Where it stops
- No anechoic chamber. Microphone comparisons are recorded in a described space and the recordings are published so you can judge.

Office & study
- What can be verified
- Published page yields, cost per page calculated from them, each maker's record on blocking third-party cartridges.
- What hands-on means
- Months of ordinary printing, with third-party consumables tried and firmware updates tracked for cartridge lockouts.
- Where it stops
- Yield figures are standardized tests, not your documents. The page says what the standard assumes so you can adjust.

Category 12
Furniture
- What can be verified
- Mattress thickness, mechanism type, frame construction, weight capacity, floor clearance needed to convert, delivery dimensions.
- What hands-on means
- Assembled, converted repeatedly, and slept on. Assessed separately as the thing it looks like and the thing it becomes.
- Where it stops
- Multi-year frame fatigue cannot be compressed into a review window and is reported as construction quality rather than proven durability.

Category 13
Workwear
- What can be verified
- Every rating in the safety code, decoded against the standard it comes from, and matched to specific trades.
- What hands-on means
- Worn on real job sites for months, with seams, soles and toe caps photographed as they fail.
- Where it stops
- Protective ratings are read from certification, never re-tested. A boot that does not meet the standard a job requires is not recommended for that job.

Category 14
Sleep
- What can be verified
- Foam density and construction where a manufacturer discloses it, trial length and the exact return conditions, materials and certifications.
- What hands-on means
- Slept on for weeks by a named sleeper with their weight and sleeping position stated, because both change the answer.
- Where it stops
- Firmness is not standardized between brands, so it is described relative to other products tested rather than given a number that means nothing.

Home & kitchen
- What can be verified
- Base construction and layer materials, published coating type and expected life, container material safety at temperature.
- What hands-on means
- Daily cooking over months, with heat distribution observed across the whole pan and dishwasher cycles counted for seals.
- Where it stops
- Coating lifespan depends heavily on use. Reported with the conditions attached, never as a single number.

If we cannot test it
Where hands-on testing is not possible, the assessment rests on published specifications, manufacturer documentation and long-run owner feedback, and the page says that in the same sentence it makes the claim. There is no laboratory, no test facility and no team. Saying so costs us an air of authority and buys something worth more, which is that the claims we do make can be believed.
