Craft cutting equipment is sold as a machine and owned as an ecosystem. The purchase price is the beginning: blades wear, mats lose their grip, and some platforms require proprietary consumables and a subscription to unlock features the hardware already has. A buyer comparing two machines on price is frequently comparing the two least important numbers.

Mat & Blade is being built to price the whole thing. The plan is to publish the real ongoing cost of each platform -- consumables, mats, and any software subscription -- alongside the hardware price, and to be explicit about which features are locked behind that subscription. Compatibility with third-party materials and blades will be checked rather than assumed, because it is often the difference between an affordable hobby and an expensive one.

Platform makers will not be able to buy a recommendation, and a subscription requirement will be reported as a cost rather than a feature however well the machine sells.
