Home security is the category with the largest gap between what is reviewed and what matters. Camera reviews cover image quality and app design at length. They rarely cover what happens to the recording: which company holds it, in which country, for how long, whether it is encrypted end to end, who inside the company can view it, and what the subscription costs once the introductory year ends. Those are the questions that determine whether a device is a good idea at all.

Siren & Safe is being built to ask them first. The plan is to treat data handling as a primary specification alongside resolution and field of view, to state the real cost of a system over several years including subscription, and to cover mechanical security -- locks, safes, reinforcement -- with the same seriousness as connected devices. Safe ratings will be reported against the standard they were certified to, or flagged as uncertified.

Siren & Safe will make money from affiliate commission when readers buy through its links, paid by the retailer. Security vendors will have no ability to buy placement, and a poor privacy record will not be overlooked because a product pays well.
