The gap between a professional tool and a cheap one is easy to see in a workshop and almost impossible to see online. Two clamps photographed against a white background look identical. One holds under load for a decade and the other deforms the first time it is asked to do real work. Price is a weak signal here, because the same castings appear under half a dozen brand names at very different prices.

Clamp & Crank is being built to sort that out for people working on their own cars at home. The plan is to concentrate on load behavior, finish quality and whether a tool can be serviced when a part wears, rather than on how a kit photographs. Where the same tool is sold under multiple labels, the site will say so. Where a tool can be used on real jobs over months, the page will record what was done with it and what failed.

Clamp & Crank will be funded by affiliate commission when a reader buys through one of its links, paid by the retailer rather than the reader. No manufacturer will be able to pay for a recommendation or see a verdict before it publishes. Where a cheaper tool is the better buy, that is what the site will say, regardless of what it pays.
