Sleep products are almost impossible to evaluate from a listing, and the industry has built around that fact. Firmness scales are not standardized between brands. Foam densities, which determine how long a mattress keeps its shape, are frequently unpublished. Trial periods look generous until the return conditions are read. And a great deal of published review content in this category is written by sites that have never had the product in a bedroom.

Heft & Hush is being built to handle the uncertainty honestly. The plan is to publish foam density and construction wherever a manufacturer discloses it, to record explicitly when they will not, and to read trial and return terms closely for the conditions that make them hard to use. Where a product can be slept on for weeks rather than assessed from a spec sheet, the page will say how long and by whom.

Heft & Hush will be funded by affiliate commission, paid by the retailer when a reader buys through one of its links. Mattress commissions are among the largest in retail, which is exactly why the rule is stated here: rankings will be decided by construction, disclosure and trial terms, never by payout.
