About Tank & Toner
Printers are the clearest example of a product sold below its true cost. A cheap inkjet is a subsidy on a consumables contract, and the meaningful number -- cost per page over the life of the machine -- appears nowhere on the box. Firmware updates that reject third-party cartridges can change that number after purchase, which makes a printer one of the few products whose running cost is not fixed at the point of sale.
Tank & Toner is being built to lead with cost per page. The plan is to calculate it from published yields for every machine covered, to state each manufacturer's record on blocking third-party cartridges, and to say plainly when a more expensive printer is cheaper within two years. Refillable tank machines and laser printers will be compared against inkjets on total cost rather than on purchase price.
Tank & Toner will be funded through affiliate commission on purchases made via its links, paid by the retailer. Recommending third-party cartridges and refillable machines typically pays less than recommending first-party consumables, and the site will do it whenever the maths supports it.
